How I Started in Digital Marketing & Landed My First Client

Introduction

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses worldwide faced an unprecedented crisis. Physical stores shut down, and people hesitated to visit retail outlets. E-commerce and digital marketing became the only way for businesses to survive.

This is the story of how I helped my first client, a ladies’ denim manufacturer and wholesaler in Sri Lanka, transition from traditional retail to a successful digital-first business model—without even building an eCommerce website.

Why digital transformation is crucial for business growth

Understanding the Client’s Problem

📍 The Challenge:

My client had been running a ladies’ denim manufacturing business for years, supplying products to retail stores. However, when COVID-19 hit, all physical stores shut down. Sales dropped to zero overnight, and he needed a quick solution to sustain his business.

Initial Request: Build an eCommerce Website

The first idea my client had was to launch an eCommerce website to sell products online. While this seemed like the obvious choice, I quickly identified some critical challenges:

  • High setup costs & time investment – Websites require domain setup, hosting, payment gateway integration, and backend management.
  • SEO takes time – New websites don’t rank instantly on Google. Without strong SEO, driving organic traffic would take months.
  • Customer behavior shift – During the pandemic, people were spending more time on social media than on new websites.

My Solution: Social Media First Approach

Instead of building an eCommerce website, I recommended a social media-focused strategy to:
✔ Get faster visibility
✔ Minimize upfront costs
✔ Reach a wider audience through targeted advertising

Step 1: Building the Brand from Scratch

Before selling online, the first step was creating a strong brand identity.

🏷️ 1. Choosing a Brand Name & Creating Social Media Pages

We selected a unique brand name that resonated with the denim fashion industry and created:

  • A Facebook page (Primary sales channel)
  • An Instagram page (For brand awareness & engagement)

📸 2. Professional Product Photography

To make the brand stand out in a crowded market, we invested in high-quality product photography. We:

  • Hired three female models to showcase the denim collection.
  • Conducted a commercial photoshoot with different styles and poses.
  • Edited photos to enhance quality while maintaining authenticity.

📌 Why this worked:
✔ High-quality images increase engagement by 40% on social media.
✔ Lifestyle photography (instead of plain product shots) boosts conversions by 30%.

🎨 3. Branding & Visual Identity

After the photoshoot, we:

  • Designed a professional logo for the brand.
  • Created a Facebook cover image & profile picture that aligned with the brand’s theme.
  • Ensured consistent color schemes & typography across all visuals.

Step 2: Launching & Promoting the Brand

📅 Starting Social Media Promotions (September 1, 2020)

With everything in place, we officially launched the brand’s Facebook and Instagram pages on September 1, 2020.

🎯 Initial Posting Strategy

We posted:

  • Product images with detailed descriptions (Size, price, material)
  • Behind-the-scenes content (Photoshoot sneak peeks, packaging process)
  • Customer testimonials & feedback

💰 Running Facebook & Instagram Ads

To increase brand visibility, we ran low-budget Facebook Ads targeting:

  • Women aged 18-40 interested in fashion & denim wear.
  • Customers in major cities like Colombo, Kandy, and Galle.
  • Shoppers who had previously interacted with fashion brands on Facebook.

Step 3: Handling Orders & Scaling the Business

📦 Order Fulfillment & Delivery Setup

As we started receiving consistent orders, we:

  • Partnered with a courier service to handle nationwide deliveries.
  • Implemented cash-on-delivery (COD) to increase trust among first-time buyers.

📊 Analyzing Customer Insights & Improving Sales

We tracked engagement, analyzed customer feedback, and identified:
Best-selling denim styles
Most active customer locations
Optimal posting times for higher engagement

💡 Key Learning:

  • Customers from Colombo & Kandy were more likely to buy premium designs.
  • Customers from smaller towns responded better to discount-based promotions.

Using these insights, we fine-tuned our content strategy, customized product designs based on demand, and increased repeat customers by 40% within six months.

Final Results: Success Within 3 Months

🚀 After just 3 months of consistent digital marketing efforts, we achieved:
A steady flow of daily orders from across Sri Lanka
100% increase in customer inquiries through Facebook Messenger
5x ROI on our initial ad spend
✔ The brand expanded its digital product line to include more designs
